The Best Rangefinder for Deer Hunting

Posted by in Hunting

After deciding to add a modern rangefinder to my hunting kit, I did a bunch of looking.  I kissed a few toads along the way, and I was also blown away by some others, but my search was over when I found the Vortex Ranger 1000 Rangefinder.  It represents the perfect intersection of a full featured scope with a price that won’t break the bank. I’m mainly a deer hunter, and most of that I do from a stand – (if you need a good tree stand and at a…read more

The Best Medium Priced Ladder Stand

Posted by in Hunting, Outdoors

Let’s get this out of the way right off – There are about as many different ladder stands out there as there are hunters using them. The big question is – where can I find a solid, comfortable and quiet stand without breaking the bank? The answer, well MY answer, anyway, is right here – the Big Game Skybox® Deluxe Ladder Stand. I’d been wanting to replace a few old and worn out hang on and ladder stands with something a little better suited to my current needs. The Skybox…read more

The Best Early Season Scent Blocker Hunting Shirt

Posted by in Hunting, Outdoors

How many times have you been on a hot, muggy early season hunt and wished for a cool, but truly functional scent blocking hunting shirt? I like to be comfortable in the woods, but I had grown used to the sometimes heavy gear that passes for “scent-blocking” these days. Yeah, there are the carbon-laced numbers, but are you going to see a carbon solution in a single layer or early season, breathable shirt? ScentBlocker® has solved this problem with their new 1.5 Performance Long-Sleeve hunting shirt. With a new technology…read more

Best lure for trout fishing

Posted by in Fishing, Outdoors

On a recent trout fishing trip in Arkansas I discovered the best lure for catching brown trout.  It is the Rapala CountDown Brown Trout.  There are several sizes and I have three, see chart below for the specs.  My best luck was using the CR05TR and CR07TR.  My fishing partner was using the CD09TR and had great success also.  I tell you these trout we caught on the Little Red River could not resist the bait.  I don’t know how many times we saw them chasing the lure and dashing…read more

Danner 453 GORE-TEX Hiking Boots

Posted by in Boots, Outdoors

Most outdoors-men can have a meaningful debate on which equipment you can skimp on and equipment you should spend an extra buck on.  For me, the right footwear is worth a few extra dollars.  There’s nothing worse than wearing ill fitting shoes all day long. I was recently looking for a hiking shoe I could wear on a summer fishing trip to Canada.  The shoe also needed to look good enough I could wear it in work situations that would take me out in the field.  The Danner 453 GORE-TEX Hiking Boots fit…read more

The Best Fishing Pole for a Little Girl

Posted by in Fishing

Almost 2 years ago I bought my little girl a Barbie Fishing Pole for her 3rd birthday. Since then we have taken it fishing dozens of times. My wife, two daughters, plus a couple cousins have caught many fish with this pole, mainly bluegill. It has never failed us. Recently we took my 4 year old and her 7 year old sister on their very first camping trip. We had a blast camping out and fishing from our friend’s pontoon boat. My daughter caught and landed her very first largemouth…read more

The perfect combination: A Mathews Z7 or Z7 Extreme bow and Big Sticky’s BBQ.

Posted by in Hunting

In October of 2011 my old Hoyt single cam bow needed a new stabilizer, so I took it to Big Creek Archery in Troy, MO. I’d driven past the shop a number of times, and it’s close to my farm. It’s a smaller full service shop with an attached shooting range. As they were helping me pick out a new stabilizer, I made the mistake of asking about a new Mathews bow. These guys know they have a product that sells itself, because their response was very low pressure. They…read more

ThermaCELL is the BEST Mosquito and Bug Repellent

Posted by in Outdoors

One of the worst things about the outdoors, be it a backyard BBQ, sitting on a deer stand, or fishing in Canada, is the damn mosquitoes. On our trip to Canada this year the mosquitoes were the worst we’ve seen in at least a decade. About three years ago we found the answer – – The Schawbel Corporation’s ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent. The unit works using a butane cartridge to heat a metal grill. A small matt saturated with repellent is in turn heated by the grill, releasing a vapor into…read more

The Best Knife for Deer Hunting

Posted by in Knives

As an avid hunter and collector of edged weaponry, I have had my hands on a sharp piece of steel or two in my days under the sun.  I’ve used custom made fixed blade hunters, and mass produced skinners.  However, one knife stands head and shoulders above the rest as an optimal piece of kit for skinning, gutting and processing deer, The AG Russell Deer Hunter, available from I’ve used this knife in the field over several seasons and have field dressed, skinned, and processed multiple whitetail deer with…read more
